Edinburgh is Scotland's second most populous city and the seventh most populous in the United Kingdom. Edinburgh Castle is a historic fortress which dominates the skyline of the city from its position on the Castle Rock. Loch Ness is a large, deep, freshwater loch in the Scottish Highlands extending for approximately 37 kilometres southwest of Inverness. Princes Street is one of the major thoroughfares in central Edinburgh and the main shopping street in the capital. St Giles' Cathedral, also known as the High Kirk of Edinburgh, is the principal place of worship of the Church of Scotland in Edinburgh. Its distinctive crown steeple is a prominent feature of the city skyline, at about a third of the way down the Royal Mile which runs from the Castle to Holyrood Palace.

The Cancer Research UK Edinburgh Centre brings together cancer scientists and clinicians from across the University of Edinburgh, delivering outstanding cancer research and improved patient care. The University of Edinburgh, founded in 1582 and now one of four in the city, is placed 18th in the QS World University Rankings for 2019. The city is also famous for the Edinburgh International Festival and the Fringe, the latter being the world’s largest annual international arts festival.
