The Traditional Medicine and Alternative Medicine have been evolved over years with various societies. Traditional medicine is developed based on the knowledge, skills, and practices of different culture and countries over generations. Folk medicine stands as the backbone of traditional medicine which is believed to provide longstanding remedies has been passed on informally within the culture. Traditional medicine is basically derived from the naturally available plant and animal material. Nowadays, most of the people believe that traditional medicine is safer as it constitutes natural products instead of the synthetic products used in modern medicine. 

Traditional medicine refers to medicines that have been formulated by using practices and knowledge which has evolved thousands of years. The market value of traditional medicines are increasing and the worldwide annual market approaches US$ 60 billion. Several countries like China, India, Nigeria, USA, and World Health Organization have made substantial research investments in the development of traditional medicine. Even several leading pharmaceutical companies are looking forward to promising medicinal herbs and novel chemical compounds.  The recent researches on traditional medicine show significant results in treating diabetes, cancer, AIDS, viral diseases and other pathogenic diseases.

Herbal medicine is one of the oldest forms of medicine which is prepared exclusively from medicinal herbs and plants. According to the World Health Organization (WHO) estimation, around 80% of the population is some Asian and African countries use herbal medicine for primary health care as it is more economical. The Herbal treatment method is also been used as remedies for chronic diseases such as cancer, diabetes, asthma and end-stage renal diseases. Herbal remedies are of increasing demand in European countries. According to the World Health Organization, approximately 25% of modern drugs used in the United States have been derived from plants. It is estimated that 11% of the total 252 drugs found in essential medicine list of WHO are exclusive of plant origin. The integrative medicine is open to new paradigms which mainly aims at healing the patient by providing effective treatment without any adverse effects.

Holistic Medicine is the concept of medicine which treats the patient as a whole. The treatment methods overlook the person’s physical, mental, spiritual and emotional wellbeing completely. The holistic medicine considers the body system as interdependent parts and so the treatment method involves in balancing the person’s complete system. Occupational therapy is a method of physical therapy which treats a patient with a holistic approach. Occupational therapy involves treatment that associates with one’s daily life activities.

Even though traditional medicine has several years of history, it has various Ethical issues which need to be addressed for global recognition. There are some quality issues pertaining to harvesting, collecting, handling and production of herbal and other traditional medicine that has to be looked out for improvement of standards. Further research and development are needed on dosage, production techniques, mode of action of the traditional medicine. Also, the clinical trials of the medicine are important to understand the safety and efficacy before being recommended to the world market
